I PUPI o GIGANTI in alcuni territori delle coste calabresi hanno un particolare significato che va al di là dell’immagine apotropaica. Essi sono i giganti buoni che aiutano la povera gente assalita dalle piraterie turche a riscattare quanto di più affettuoso esiste nell’animo di ogni vittima del terrore.Generalmente vengono rappresentati con le figura di un RE e di una REGINA che danzando al suono dei tamburi emulano movimenti tipici di un corteggiamento, ma il significato della loro danza per le strade dei paesi è quello di incutere paura negli infedeli e dare una mano a quanti ad essi credono. Sono figure poco raffinate, si potrebbe dire che rasentano la caricatura ma sono ugualmente amati dagli adulti e temuti dai bambini che al loro passaggio scappano per cercare rifugio tra le braccia della loro madre. Ancora oggi se si vuole fare un complimento ad una ragazza si usa il detto “muso di pupa” (mussa i pupa).Essi appaiono in ogni festa patronale coinvolgendo la gente del luogo che smette qualsiasi attività per omaggiarli e spesso agli uomini che sorreggono il fusto di tali figure viene offerto del buon vino, perché si è del parere che se costoro sono un po’ brilli (avvinazzati) rendo l’atmosfera più allegra. Oggi ad animare i PUPI o i GIGANTI non sono più gli uomini adulti ma gli adolescenti che continuano la tradizione dei loro padri.

In some calabrian territories the meaning of the Giants or , as we usually call them , “ i Pupi “ ( with a very funny pronunciation : poo-pee !! ) , goes over the friendly exorcising image .They are gentle and polite giants who helps the poor folks , attacked by the terrible turkish pirates , to ransom whatever could survive to our souls in every terror’s victim . As usual they are represented by the image of a dancing “ Kin g “ and a “ Queen “ at the drums time/beat , emulating the typical admiring movements , but the true meaning of their dances through all the town streets and boulevards is to frighten turkish pirates to give an help to the local people who trust in them . They aren’t refined shapes, we can also say that they are almost caricatures; but they are loved by the adults and all the kid are afraid of them and usually run to their own mothers to find a shelter between their secure arms. Still nowadays if you want to admire a local girl you can call her “ mussa i pupa “ ( doll lips ) . They appear every time there is a village fest all the people participate to their dance by stopping all the activities and usually offer some local to the giants drivers because we think that if they drink a little there is a more funny atmosphere .Nowadays the adolescents keep on going with the “ Giants “ local tradition , animating “ I Pupi “ on our streets…
